When not at NDC, Jenny hikes on trails and walks in their neighborhood, always looking for clotheslines, vegetable gardens, and skunk cabbage. We are home to over 70 luxury showrooms and offer an unparalleled line-up of residential and commercial products. Our services are available at no cost (pro bono), sliding scale, and market rate, depending on the project. With a staff of dedicated designers, facilitators and project managers — supported by a robust network of volunteer planners, architects, and artists — we partner on projects large and small, across jurisdictions in Maryland and Washington, D.C. We partner with communities and local government agencies to provide top notch design, planning, and capacity-building services. The volunteer architects started simply, working with residents and a few nonprofits to develop for community centers, playgrounds, affordable housing, and neighborhood master plans.

This guide makes designers more aware of who will inhabit a space, the neighborhood in which it exists, and the surrounding environment to more sensitively drive equity in their practices. Launched in 2022 by AIA National’s New Urban Agenda Task Force, it was led by NDC and our partner Gensler, guided by an expert steering committee, informed by the experiences of our focus group stakeholders, and shepherded by staff across AIA. ROW Art projects help calm traffic, beautify our neighborhoods, and increase public space for pedestrians.

Our planning team helps neighbors define a collective vision about how their community should look and function.
NDC projects are collaborations between residents, community stakeholders, design professionals, local government agencies, fellow nonprofits, and our staff. Together we lay the groundwork for improving blocks, renovating parks and school grounds, reclaiming abandoned structures for community use, and revitalizing commercial districts. Our placemaking team listens to the unique history of each neighborhood and proposes design and art solutions that anchor and amplify those stories in place. We can support you in identifying public art opportunities, artist selection, designing placemaking elements and events, or securing a historic designation for your building or neighborhood. Dana is responsible for securing and managing the grants and contracts at the Neighborhood Design Center for both the Prince Georges County and Baltimore offices.

The Neighborhood Design Center specializes in participatory design and planning services that support equity in the built environment. Through a process we call co-design, we collaborate with our community partners to engage stakeholders — from funders and government agencies to neighborhood leaders and residents — and create responsive, community-driven design solutions. Our work enhances fundraising applications, garners public support for community-led projects, and is an advocacy tool for community members who are building healthy, welcoming places.
