Sing your heart out in karaokeOne of the nice things about a cruise is that you don’t have to worry about embarrassing yourself. After all, once the cruise is over you won’t likely see these people again. Karaoke is available at different spots, such as Spotlight Karaoke on Oasis of the Seas. Grab a mic and show off your vocal chops, singing one of your favorite hit songs. Ever since Royal Caribbean first put a rock climbing wall on one of their ships, the feature has become so popular that they've gone on to install them on every other vessel. That is, of course, unless you're booked onto an MSC Cruise on one of their Meraviglia class ships.
Rainy Day Activities
We’ve seen large ones with dozens of games, and others that have been relatively small. Games are usually higher priced — expect it to cost $1-2 to play anything. We have been on cruises where there is a “Happy Hour” where arcade games are discounted 50% for a short period. Play shuffleboardIf you’re in the mood for some laid-back fun, a game of shuffleboard gives you something fun to do with friends, family and fellow cruisers without taxing your muscles or energy level. It’s a perfect way to wind down, especially if you’ve been engaging in high-energy activities all day. Plus, it’s about as classic a cruise ship activity as you will ever see.
Fun for Kids
Families love ships packed with all sorts of gee-whiz diversions. Additionally, The Dome, a multi-leveled covered deck, will feature an indoor and outdoor pool during the day. At night, the pool will be converted into the first-of-its-kind entertainment venue. The ship is part of what MSC Cruises has dubbed the "Seaside EVO" subclass. While MSC Seascape is technically part of the same class of ships as MSC Seaside and Seaview, the cruise line claims that 65% of the public areas were reimagnined onboard the two newer ships.

On many cruise ships, you’ll be able to participate or watch pool games and antics. Water volleyball, sexy leg contests, belly flop contests and more may just on schedule at the main pool. Keep in mind that different cruise lines offer different activities and a different experience. These days, cruise ships of all sizes feature a fitness center and spa onboard.
They're available on a company's Breakaway and Breakaway Plus Class ships, and each one has been designed differently to offer unique experience. Not surprisingly, since they first opened, NCL said that the go kart tracks are there number one on board activity, and there are continuous queues full of kids and adults alike. Roller coasters were once something that you only see in an amusement park, but recently they seemingly started to appear almost everywhere, from backyards to the tops of tower blocks.
Activities that carry a fee include tastings (wine, beer, whiskey), bingo and some interactive classes like cooking or cupcake decorating. On newer ships, activities like go-karts, laser tag, escape rooms and virtual-reality game play might cost extra. Some of these activities also require reservations; check your daily planner for specifics. Pools, hot tubs and water parks are fabulous outdoor options, but they might not be available during poor weather. A limited number of ships have retractable roofs that offer protection for some pool and hot tub areas (though not for any waterslides).
Watch the Game in the Middle of the Ocean
If you're the volunteer type, vacation is as good a time as any to give back. If you're sailing with Carnival, check out Groove for St. Jude, where passengers pay a modest sign-up fee (donated to St. Jude Children's Hospital) to have a member of the entertainment staff teach them a dance. This classic pastime is available on voyages with just about every mainstream cruise line. Although most prizes are cruise lined branded swag, some -- including cash and free cruises -- are more than worth the price of admission.
Lounge by the Pool
Carnival hasn't gone quite as big with its ships, for the most part. But Carnival still packs its vessels with a lot of fun-focused activities. If you’re looking for a quiet place away from kids or even louder pool games and activities. Casinos are packed with people playing slot machines or trying their luck at table games. Lounges feature live bands and cabaret singers for your dancing or listening pleasure, while piano bars, complete with sing-alongs, are popular hotspots on many ships.
Most lines' ships have sizeable in-cabin libraries on demand, some free and some for a cost. Lines like Holland America and Disney Cruise Line show movies at indoor cinemas, but Disney's Buena Vista Theater is especially notable for featuring first-run movies that are currently in theaters -- for free. No matter what you choose, you'll see a snippet of the port you're visiting in a safe way.
It’s also an easy-going activity and only takes about minutes to play a round. So when you’re bored or have a few minutes to kill before dinner, you can get a round in as easy entertainment. Styles vary, and the lineup will be mentioned in your ship’s daily planner. It’s almost always something easy to listen to (don’t expect any heavy metal), and usually the bands play covers ranging from classic hits to new favorites. In the evenings you’ll find live music being played at locations around the ship.
You’ll see the courts painted with boxes nearby holding the equipment. Ride the North StarIf you’re sailing aboard one of Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships, make sure you experience this unique attraction. The North Star observation pod extends upwards and even over the side of the ship so passengers can take in a 360-degree view from 300 feet in the air. If you’re ok with being up over the ship, it provides a great view (and thrill).
There are also opportunities to win money and prizes with tournaments and the ever-popular Bingo games. Are you interested in learning more about scotch, wine or even bartending and making certain drinks? On many cruise ships, you can participate in tastings as well as workshops, so you can learn how to make the perfect cocktail.
Royal Caribbean’s onboard video arcades vary from ship to ship, but they all offer the lure of parent-free fun amidst flashing lights. Cabins on cruise ships aren't where guests tend to spend most of their time, but offer the perfect place to rest and unwind after a long day of taking in the sights and making most of the facilities on board. Their Quantum class vessels, which first set sail in 2014, are the third largest cruise ships in the world. Royal Caribbean offers short trips into the sky to passengers on the Quantum-class ships, with a typical ride lasting 15 to 20 minutes. However, passengers can also book the pods for special occasions such as a wedding proposal or ceremony. Carnival hasn't gone quite as big with most of its ships, but it still packs them with many fun-focused activities.
Kids will love the redesigned youth venues, which include themed play areas (i.e., Fairytale Hall, Star Wars Cargo Bay, Marvel Superhero Academy, and the Walt Disney Imagineering Lab). If you are looking for a fun adults-only cruise, Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady may be right up your alley. There's also a tech immersive mini-golf course, waterslides, and virtual reality arcade. As of February 2023, MSC World Europa is the only World Class ship sailing; however, MSC World America is scheduled to launch in 2024, with two additional World Class ships following in 2025 and 2027, respectively. The itineraries are just as interesting and fun as the ship itself, sailing to places like United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Mediterranean, and even through the Suez Canal. Plus, the children's area is the largest in the fleet, encompassing over 8,200 square feet with seven rooms dedicated to different age groups spanning 0 to 17.
